Thanking its many donors, the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust on Wednesday announced it has raised over £500,000 in donations and pledges to support the planned statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square. This was announced as UK minister and Indian diaspora champion, Priti Patel, visited Gandhi Ashram. Donations so far have ranged from £1 to £200,000 as people from all over the world have pledged to support the statue designed by sculptor Philip Jackson.

Lord Meghnad Desai, founder of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said: “It is fantastic that we have reached this milestone in just three months, I cannot thank our generous supporters enough. We are looking forward to the final push as more people support this historic monument. In our latest calculations, we need a total of £750,000 in all for all the work related to the statue, and so we are now well past the halfway mark. Any extra money will be used by the Trust to promote the work of Mahatma Gandhi further.”
